Türkiye country profile

This profile sets out the stable identifiers that international bodies assign to Türkiye, then explains how to verify changing figures (headcount, currency, government, economy) from primary sources. Every figure carries its source and reference year; none should be treated as permanent.

Classification facts

The following identifiers are fixed by international standards bodies and do not change with political cycles. They form the backbone for any cross-country comparison.

Field Value Source
UN M49 code 792 UN Statistics Division
ISO alpha-2 TR ISO 3166-1
ISO alpha-3 TUR ISO 3166-1
UN region Asia UN M49
UN subregion Western Asia UN M49
UN member state Yes UN M49
World Bank capital field Ankara World Bank country profile

The UN M49 overview assigns Türkiye to the region Asia and the subregion Western Asia. This is a statistical geography, not a political or territorial statement. The grouping exists “for statistical convenience” and does not imply any political or other affiliation. The M49 code 792, ISO alpha-2 TR, and ISO alpha-3 TUR are stable identifiers used across UN and ISO systems.

What the classification does and does not mean

The UN M49 framework groups economies for data collection. Placing Türkiye in Western Asia reflects a coding convention, not a judgment about political alliances or cultural identity. Türkiye is a UN member state, and the classification does not affect its standing in any regional grouping. The World Bank country API lists Ankara as the capital; the Bank uses the English short name Türkiye in its database.

Country basics

Capital: Ankara (World Bank country profile field; not Istanbul, which is the largest city but not the administrative capital). UN M49 code: 792 ISO alpha-2: TR ISO alpha-3: TUR UN region: Asia UN subregion: Western Asia UN membership: Member state IANA country code top-level domain: .tr (IANA Root Zone Database)

Population: what the number means and where to check it

The most frequently cited headcount for Türkiye is an estimate, not a census count. The national statistical office, Türkiye İstatistik Kurumu (TÜİK), publishes the address-based population registration results; the most recent full census-style count is from 2021. For up-to-date estimates, the UN World Population Prospects is the standard international source, with annual revisions. As of the 2023 revision, the figure stood at approximately 85.3 million, but this changes annually and should always be checked against the latest UN or TÜİK release. TÜİK’s own mid-year estimates may differ slightly from UN projections because of differences in migration assumptions and the reference date. For any cross-country comparison, use the UN World Population Prospects as the consistent dataset, and note the reference year (2023 for the most recent revision).

Census versus estimate

The Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK) conducts the Address Based Population Registration System (ADNKS), an annual registry-based count rather than a traditional census. The most recent full census was in 2000; since then, the official headcount is updated yearly from the address registry. The UN Population Division publishes its own estimates, which are not identical to TÜİK’s because of differing methodologies and coverage. For comparison purposes, always state which source you are using and the reference year.

How to verify changing data

Capital, language, and currency

Ankara is the capital per the World Bank country profile and the UN M49 listing. Istanbul is the largest city by headcount; the distinction between administrative capital and largest city is a common point of confusion.

Turkish is the official language of the Republic of Türkiye. Minority languages are not counted uniformly across sources; official statistics and international compilations can differ. For current figures, refer to the national statistical office and UNESCO education statistics.

The official currency is the Turkish lira (TRY). Exchange rates fluctuate; do not rely on a single number. For current rates, use the central bank or a major financial data provider.

Government

Türkiye is a presidential republic. The president is head of state and head of government. For the current president and government composition, refer to the Presidency of the Republic of Türkiye and the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye. Political classifications are contested; describe them with attribution, not as settled fact.

Economy

For income classification, consult the World Bank’s current country classification by lending category. For GDP figures, use the World Bank’s API or IMF’s WEO database, and always note the year and whether the figure is nominal or PPP-adjusted.

Travel and security

Visa and entry requirements change frequently and depend on the traveller’s nationality. Always check your own government’s travel advisory and the IATA Travel Centre. Türkiye’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs publishes official visa information, but it may not reflect every nationality’s situation; your own foreign ministry is the authoritative source for you.

For current travel advice, consult your own government’s travel advisory before planning. Security conditions change without notice. Do not rely on any static page for safety decisions.

Culture, heritage, and health

UNESCO World Heritage properties in Türkiye include Göbekli Tepe, the archaeological site of Troy, and the Historic Areas of Istanbul, among others. These are UNESCO designations, not endorsements of current political status or territorial claims.

WHO provides country-specific health statistics and emergency risk assessments. For current vaccination requirements or outbreak information, consult WHO and your own government’s health authority.

Cost of living

Cost-of-living comparisons are time-sensitive and source-dependent. Use Numbeo (crowdsourced) for a rough sense of prices, and compare with official statistics from TÜİK for cost indices.

Turkey or Türkiye?

In 2022 the Republic of Türkiye standardised the use of Türkiye in international contexts, and the UN officially recorded the name change. English-language international organizations and many governments now use Türkiye in official communications. However, “Turkey” remains common in older documents, informal usage, and some English-language media. The ISO codes (TR, TUR) and M49 code (792) are unaffected by the naming preference. When citing statistics, use the name as given by the source, and note the source’s year.

Primary data sources

The World Bank country API is the most practical single source for updating the country profile. The endpoint returns a machine-readable list of all World Bank member and non-member economies. The entry for Türkiye (ISO code TR) includes the official capital (Ankara), region, income level, and the World Bank’s lending category. Population, GDP, Gini, life expectancy, and other indicators are available from the World Bank indicators API, but each series carries its own reference year; always note the “date” field in the response.

For census-based headcount figures, consult TÜİK, which publishes the national address-based population registration system results. For legal definitions of citizenship, language and official institutions, use the Turkish government’s portal or the Constitution of the Republic of Türkiye. For visa and entry rules, your own government’s travel advisory is the authoritative source, not a comparison page. The IATA Travel Centre is the standard industry reference for current passport, visa, and health entry requirements.

Citation style

Use inline citations such as (UN M49, accessed 2025) or (World Bank, 2024). Use the reference year only when the source defines one. For changing data, give the reference year and the retrieval date, for example (World Bank, 2023 data; retrieved 2025).
